Buffalo Port (port code: USBUF) is a major intermodal port on the Great Lakes and the United States' busiest inland port. It is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Erie, at the entrance to the Niagara River, 22 miles from the Welland Canal’s terminus on Lake Erie.
The port has excellent facilities for handling both inbound and outbound bulk material shipments. Containerised, bulk and general cargo can all be handled at the port. The port handles approximately 750,000t of cargo annually. The major commodities handled include potash, coke, iron ore, stone, salt, coal, machinery and foundry sand.
The port is the first major U.S. port of call encountered after leaving the Welland Canal. This allows the port to serve large Great Lakes vessels as well as international vessels arriving via the St. Lawrence Seaway and Welland Canal. The maximum length of the vessels recorded to having entered this port is 226 meters. The maximum draught is 8.1 meters. The maximum deadweight is 37,411t.
