The Port of Ngqura (Port Code: ZAZBA), also known as Coega Harbour, is a deep-water port on the east coast of South Africa, around 20km north east of Port Elizabeth. Situated at the mouth of the Coega River, it is the newest and deepest container port in South Africa. Port Elizabeth is located 20 km to the west of Ngqura. The port offers global container shipping and other world class port facilities to businesses situated in the adjacent Coega Industrial Development Zone, and beyond. It also relieves congestion for other ports.
The port is the only port in South Africa with environmental authorization for its construction and operation. Besides, it is the first in the world to have a fixed jet pump sand bypass, which recreates the natural longshore drift of sand along the coast, and pumps the sand from the west to the east. A new container terminal up the Coega River is planned as a future port expansion for regional development.
