Heraklion port (port code: GRHER), also translated as Iraki Ion Port, is the third busiest port in Greece. Heraklion port is located at the southeast end of Greece, on the south side of the AEGEAN. The north coast of Crete's island is 3km west of the nearest airport: Nikos Kazantzakis International airport. Greece’s capital city of Athens is 340km to the northeast of Heraklion, reachable in 7-13 hours by ferry. The nearest island to Heraklion port is Santorini, a 2-3 hour ferry ride away.
The port area of Heraklion Port is surrounded by two breakwaters, with a water area of 590,000 square meters. The shoreline of the main wharf is about 2500m long. The maximum water depth is 9.1m. Loading and unloading equipment includes various shore cranes, portable cranes, and tugs. The largest ship that has ever entered the port is 16,000 deadweight tons.
