The Karatsu Port (Port Code:JPKAR), known as Kara-no-Tsu (Port leading to China) from old times, is a quiet port facing the Genkai Sea and it has flourished as a trading hub with the continent. The port was developed as a shipping port for coal from the Meiji period, and foreign trade was also active in the Taisho period.
Karatsu Port is geographically close to Asia and has been deeply involved with the area throughout history. Seoul (South Korea) and Osaka are nearly the same distance; it is only 200 km to Busan Port. And within a 1,000 km radius lie the major commercial ports of China, such as Shanghai, Qingdao, and Dalian. This is the same distance as to the Kanto area of Japan.
