North Sydney (Port Code:CANSY) is an important port in Atlantic Canada, serving as the western terminus of the Marine Atlantic ferry service, which is located on the north side of Sydney Harbour, along the eastern coast of Cape Breton Island. It acts as the marine link for the Trans-Canada Highway to Newfoundland and is often termed "The Gateway To Newfoundland" for that reason.
The port of North Sydney is situated on the west side of Sydney Harbour, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Berthage consists of M V Osprey Ltd Wharves, Marine Atlantic Terminals (for their ferry service to Newfoundland), and private general cargo/fish plant wharves. The port is open all year, during the winter months vessels may require Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker assistance. Principal imports: Fish and fish products. Exports: General cargo, asphalt and cement.
