The Port of Thunder Bay (port code:CATDB / CATHU) extends along 45km of shoreline and has facilities for handling all types of cargo, including grain, coal, potash, forest products, general cargoes, heavy lifts, bagged grains project cargoes and liquid bulk. It is located at the head of the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway System, a dynamic navigable waterway that stretches 3700 kilometres into the heart of the North American continent.
The port is primarily a grain shipping port for Western Canada, with approximately 85% of the cargo tonnage consisting of grain exported to ports around the world. In 2019, 429 ships called at the port, with 316 being domestic vessels and 113 foreign vessels.
