The Port of Thursday Island (Port Code: AUTHU) is a port located in the Torres Strait at the most northern part of Australia. Ports North owns the wharf facilities, which are established on both Thursday Island and Horn Island. As a naturally sheltered port, it serves the two islands as most cargo handled is in support of local communities. It also operates as a major transhipment point for the supply of essential cargos to other islands of the Torres Strait and the Gulf of Carpentaria. Imports handled include petroleum products, propane gas in bulk and general cargo. Exports include shell, prawns and crayfish. Approximately 78,000 tons of cargo is handled annually.
Due to its strategic location, a number of government agencies, including Customs and Fisheries patrols, are based there.
