Trincomalee Harbour (Port Code: LKTRR) is a large-sized natural seaport in Trincomalee Bay or Koddiyar Bay. Situated on the northeastern coast of Sri Lanka, in the heart of the Indian Ocean, it has the strategic location for centuries. It covers a land area of 5,261 hectares (13,000 acres). It was held by the Portuguese, Dutch, French and the British for its size and depth. Trincomalee Harbor, formerly a British naval base, was taken over by the Inaams Ceylonese government in 1956 to be developed as a commercial port. The harbour is being developed for bulk, and break bulk, cargo and port-related industrial activities including heavy industries, tourism, agriculture, etc. At present SLPA is in the process to re-develop Trincomalee as a metropolis growth center. Currently, the Port of Trincomalee has four multipurpose berths, over 1,750 meters of quay and primarily handles bulk cargoes. Its location, characteristics and relatively low congestion makes it attractive as a repairs and maintenance location.
