Welland port (Port Code:CAWEL) is a port in Ontario, Canada, connecting Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. It forms a key section of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes Waterway. Traversing the Niagara Peninsula from Port Weller in St. Catharines to Port Colborne,it is located along the bank of the Welland (Chippawa) River and the junction of Canboro Road.
Welland port was originally called The Narrows because of the narrow strip of land that separated the Welland River from Beaver Creek. Welland port was settled as early as 1795 and by 1800 was already an established community.
The Welland Canal passes about 3,000 ships which transport about 40,000,000 tons of cargo a year. It was a major factor in the growth of the city of Toronto, Ontario.
