Borg El Arab International Airport (IATA code: HBE, ICAO code: HEBA) became the principal airport of Alexandria from December 2010 when all traffic was transferred from Alexandria International Airport. It is located about 40 km (25 mi) southwest of Alexandria, in Borg El Arab. The airport also serves the nearby areas of the Nile Delta. The airport has the capacity to handle 1.2 million passengers per year becoming Alexandria’s central airport.
A brand new airport terminal was opened in February 2010 which consisted of a new passenger building and an administration building. The passenger terminal is designed in the shape of a boat and consists of three floors.
