SPK, Sapporo city code, refers to the Sapporo metropolitan area, a city in Japan. It is the largest city north of Tokyo, and the largest city on Hokkaido, the northernmost main island of the country. It is the capital city of Hokkaido Prefecture and Ishikari Subprefecture.
The Sapporo area is served by two airports: Okadama Airport (IATA: OKD, ICAO: RJCO), which offers regional flights within Hokkaido, and New Chitose Airport (IATA: CTS, ICAO: RJCC) , a larger international airport located in the city of Chitose 30 miles (48 km) away connected by regular rapid trains taking around 40 minutes.
The scheduled airline service in OKD is limited to turboprop flights to other cities in Hokkaidō. The airport is also used by the Japan Self-Defense Forces and by corporate and general aviation operators: an adjacent facility houses the air traffic control center for Hokkaido and the Tohoku region.
CTS houses large aircraft. As of 2018, New Chitose Airport was the fifth-busiest airport in Japan, and ranked 64th in the world in terms of passengers carried.
