Wellington International Airport (IATA code: WLG, ICAO code: NZWN), formerly known as Rongotai Airport, is a public airport serving Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand. It is located in the suburb of Rongotai, 3 nautical miles (5.5 kilometers) south-east from the city centre, bordered by residential and commercial areas to the east and west, and by Wellington Harbour and Cook Strait to the north and south respectively.
The airport comprises a small 110-hectare (270-acre) site on the Rongotai isthmus, a stretch of low-lying land between Wellington proper and the Miramar Peninsula. It operates a single terminal at its east, with three piers: South, South-West and North-West. The terminal and piers have a total floor area of 32,300 square metres (348,000 square feet).
The airport takes a total of 6.4 million passengers direct to 26 destinations around the world each year. It was the third busiest airport in New Zealand (after Auckland and Christchurch) handling a total of 6,049,194 passengers in the year ending 31 March 2017, and the second busiest airport in New Zealand for IFR movements (84,070 in 2013). In a year ending June 2019, it handled 6,441,935 passengers with 100,696 aircraft movements.
