St. John's International Airport (IATA code: YYT, ICAO code: CYYT) is a public airport serving the St. John's metropolitan area and the Avalon Peninsula in Canada. Situated in Newfoundland and Labrador, the easternmost province of Canada, 3 nautical miles (5.6 kilometers; 3.5 miles) northwest of St. John's, it is the second largest in Atlantic Canada based on the number of passengers and is the most easterly in North America.
The airport is part of the National Airports System, and is operated by St. John's International Airport Authority Inc. Designated as an international airport by Transport Canada, it is classified as an airport of entry by Nav Canada and is staffed by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). CBSA officers at this airport can handle aircraft with no more than 165 passengers. However, they can handle up to 450 if the aircraft is unloaded in stages. In 2019, the airport handled a total of 1,435,013 passengers, representing a decrease 3.4% of from the previous year, with 41,788 aircraft movements.
The airport’s terminal building was re-developed in 2002 and was expanded to a total area of 175,000 square feet. It has undergone more renovations in 2016. The first phase was designated to add an additional 145,000 square feet incorporated into the three levels of the east end of the existing terminal building, and to significantly expand the range of passenger services while improving the operational efficiency for the airlines and the agencies working within the building. The second phase of the expansion was designated to add a further 72,000 square feet to the west end of the existing building that would support the services and facilities necessary for arriving aircraft and passengers. The total area of the terminal building would double in size when completed and would be capable of accommodating 2 million annual passengers.
