Sylhet Osmani International Airport (IATA code: ZYL, ICAO code: VGSY) formerly known as Sylhet Civil Airport, is the third largest airport in Bangladesh after Dhaka and Chittagong. It is located at 15 kilometers north-east from Sylhet city.
The airport was designated an international airport by the government in 2002, but it was not up to international standards due to shortage of equipment then. Upgradation work of terminal facilities to enable handling of international flights work was started in 2006. The improvements included construction of a new terminal building, two jetways and a taxiway. At present domestic and international passenger and cargo flights are operating by the national and international airlines operators to and from the airport. There is a cargo terminal at the airport to facilitate import and export of cargo. All the activities of cargo building are performed under the supervision of CAAB.
Currently the handling capacity of the airport is 600,000 passengers per annum. In April 2020, a Chinese company, namely Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) was appointed to construct a new terminal building including a cargo building, a modern equipped ATC tower, taxiway, apron and a modern fire station in the airport. The new terminal building will increase the airport’s handling capacity to 2 million per annum. There will be six boarding bridges and thirty-six check in counters.
