Maersk has established a new air cargo division, Maersk Air Cargo, to show its determination to march into the air cargo market since this April. And its airfreight services will be expanded further, as represented by the move to launch direct flights between China and the US by the end of this year. Major cities playing the role of manufacturing hubs or trade centers in China will be connected to their peers in the US East Coast and Mid West.
According to Torben Bengtsson, the director of Maersk Air Cargo, the big step taken by Maersk to develop air cargo networks is meant to meet the about-to-increase consumer demand for air shipping.
On November 28, Maersk launched two weekly flights connecting Hangzhou to Chicago and Rockford, whose shipping routes would also pass through Incheon, Korea. The cities mentioned above can be viewed as important gateways to commerce. More air market access would be offered in this way.
A total of 5 air freighters will be operated by Maersk, including 2 Boeing 777 and 3 Boeing 767-300. And it is expected that the air cargo services provided by Maersk will be merged with its other freight forwarding services in a bid to open up more possibilities in the near future.
