Altamira Port (port code: MXATM) is the main container port for the State of Tamaulipas in Mexico. It is situated on the north-central shores of the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 12 nautical miles north of Tampico.
This port services an important area of economic and industrial activity in the country which includes the states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, Coahuila and San Luis Potosi, amongst others. It is linked to this zone by rail and highways. It has a water depth of 12.5 meters, and this is maintained by continuous dredging. It is under consideration for extensive development.
The port handles liquid and dry bulk, petrochemicals, LNG, container and general cargo. It handles approximately 12.2 million tons of cargo and 397,000TEU annually.
Each year about 1,500 vessels visit this port, among which around 73% are cargo vessels, and 20% are tankers. The maximum length of the vessels recorded to having entered this port is 337 meters. The maximum draught is 12.5 meters. The maximum deadweight is 117,095t.
