Amapala Port (port code: HNAPA) is the main Pacific port of Honduras, serving both coastal and overseas trade. Situated on Isla de Tigre (Tiger Island) in the Gulf of Fonseca, in southwestern Honduras, it is medium in size.
The port lacks modern infrastructure but features a natural deep channel. Opened in 1868, it exported large quantities of gold, silver and other ores during the 19th century, although its progress was retarded by the delay in constructing a transcontinental railway from Puerto Cortés.
By the mid-1970s, the port was gradually replaced in importance by the port of San Lorenzo on the mainland. The maximum length of the vessels recorded to having entered this port is 15 meters. The type of vessels regularly calling at this port is sailing vessels, accounting for 87%.
