Arecibo Port (port code: PRARE) is a medium-sized seaport on the north coast of Puerto Rico. It is situated 32 nautical miles west of San Juan.
The port is an open bay, partly protected by a breakwater extending 0.2 nautical miles southwest from the headland. However, it is not considered safe for vessel operations, which are practically non-existent, except for tug-barge operations (liquid chemicals are pumped out from a tank-barge alongside the pier through a pipeline to the Rico Chemical storage tanks ashore). A sizeable fleet of pleasure craft use a section of the berthing facilities. There has been a significant growth in tug-barge traffic calling at the port. Port installations are under the control of the Puerto Rico Ports Authority.
The port handles approximately 285,000t of cargo and 200 vessels annually. With a maximum draft of 6 meters being allowed, the maximum length of the vessels recorded to having entered this port is 24 meters.
