Belawan Port (port code: IDBLW) is one of the main ports of Sumatra and the second largest export port of palm oil, rubber and coffee in Indonesia. It is situated on the northeast coast of Sumatra facing the busy Malacca Strait, on the estuary of the Deli and Belawan rivers in northeastern Sumatra, 23 kilometers south of Medan City.
The port has five major wharves: Belawan Lama, Ujung Baru, the Citra wharf, the IKD wharf, and the ferry wharf. Belawan Lama contains storage and handling facilities of 5.0 thousand square meters of covered space and 11.5 thousand square meters of open yards. Ujung Baru contains 38.5 thousand square meters of covered space and 19.2 thousand square meters of open yards. The Citra wharf contains 16.8 thousand square meters of covered space and 25.2 thousand square meters of open yards. The IKD wharf has 9.4 thousand square meters of open yard. The ferry wharf covers 539 square meters and has capacity for 720 people on one trip.
The port handles approximately 11 million tons of cargo and 320,500TEU annually. It is a major exporter of rubber and palm oil, with a growing export trade in manufactured goods. Forest products, tobacco, tea and coffee are also handled.
Each year about 1,770 vessels visit this port, among which around 45% are cargo vessels, 24% are tankers, and 20.5% are dredging vessels. The maximum length of the vessels recorded to having entered this port is 296 meters. The maximum draught is 11.4 meters. The maximum deadweight is 172,639t.
