Galveston port (port code: USGAL / USGLS) is a large port in the United States. It is situated 6.5 nautical miles from the open sea, close west of the entrance to Galveston Bay, on the southeast shore of the bay.
The port owns and operates for hire, public wharves, transit sheds, open and covered storage facilities, warehouses and freight handling facilities. It handles approximately 5,307,000t of cargo annually. Cargo handled include dry bulk, general cargo, Ro-Ro, containers, petroleum products.
Each year about 1,000 vessels and 800,000 passengers visit this port. The types of vessels regularly calling at this port are passenger vessels, accounting for around 25.5%; oil/chemical tankers, taking up approximately 13%; and fishing vessels, taking a proportion of 9%.
