Georgetown port (port code: GYGEO) is the principal port in Guyana. Located on the east side of the mouth of Demerara River, and east of the Essequibo River, it is medium in size.
The port has a river frontage of 2 nautical miles with 39 berths and is equipped with six main wharves with depths alongside ranging from 2.5 to 6.0 meters. Facilities are available for the handling and storage of general cargo, bulk (liquid and solid) cargo and containers.
The port handles approximately 44,000t of cargo annually. The principal exports are sugar, rice, bauxite, timber, rum and marine products. The main imports include petroleum products, general and containerised cargo.
About 48% of vessels regularly calling at this port are cargo vessels. The maximum length of the vessels recorded to having entered this port is 190 meters. The maximum draught is 8.4 meters. The maximum deadweight is 46,858t.
