Hamilton port (port code: CAHAM), formerly known as Burlington Bay, is a medium-sized natural harbour in Canada. It is situated at the southwest end of Lake Ontario and is linked to two major Great Lakes shipping routes: the Welland Canal entrance, approximately 26 nautical miles from the Burlington Canal and the St. Lawrence River, approximately 151 nautical miles from Hamilton Harbour.
Over 11,000 meters of berthing space is available in the port which handles cargo ranging from raw materials such as coal and iron ore (for use in the production of steel), salt and sand, to grains and soybeans, liquid fertiliser and jet fuel. The main import and export cargo is steel in the form of billet and coils.
This port handles approximately 12,000,000t of cargo and 700 vessels. The types of vessels regularly calling at this port are bulk carrier, accounting for about 56%; and general cargo vessels, taking up around 12%.
