Iquitos (Port Code:PEIQU) is a Peruvian Amazon River cruise port located in the most remote part of Peru. The city is the commercial center for the surrounding areas, also a major oil production and an international tourist destination. Iquitos port is considered one of the world's furthest inland waterway ports of major size, also accessible by ocean-going cruise ships.
It is located about 2,300 miles (3,700 km) upstream from the Atlantic Ocean and 640 miles (1,030 km) north-northeast of Lima. It was founded in 1864 at the site of an Indian village and became the chief shipping port for the region during the rubber boom of the late 19th century.
Today, the Port of Iquitos is an important port for shipping lumber from the Amazon rainforest. It is also home to industries producing rum, beer, and oil. The Port of Iquitos is an increasingly popular tourist destination as interest in the rainforests of the Amazon grows. Trips down river from the Port of Iquitos to Manaus, Brazil, and the Atlantic Ocean are gaining in popularity.
