İzmit (Port Code:TRIZT) has a history as a port city. As of 1913, the Turkish government had been working to privatize the port. Izmit is located at the head of the Gulf of Izmit, at southeast end of the Marmara Sea. Izmit (Kocaeli) is the main city in the Gulf of Izmit. The area is heavily populated with industrial plants, shipyards, factories, storage tanks for chemical industries, paper mills and oil refineries.
