Izumisano (Port Code:JPIZU) was an important transportation centre during the Heian period (794–1185), and it later became a market for cotton, agricultural produce, and fish. Industry has expanded on reclaimed coastal land, manufacturing textiles (especially towels) and machinery. Izumisano is also a trade centre for onions destined for the Ōsaka-Kōbe metropolitan area. Izumisano is located approximately halfway between Osaka City and Wakayama City, bordered by Osaka Bay to the northwest and the Izumi Mountains and Kongō-Ikoma-Kisen Quasi-National Park to the south.
