Mar del Plata (Port Code:ARMDQ) is one of the major fishing ports and the biggest seaside beach resort in Argentina. It is the homeport for an important sector of the fishing industry although this has been affected by increased fishing activities based on patagonian ports to the south. There are considerable domestic movements of fish and petroleum by-products as well as small amounts of imports. Plans are to extend pier 3 abt 160m eastward, and to construct piers 8 & 9. (between 7 and 10).
Mar del Plata’s port is formed by two areas: South and North. The South area is a commercial one. It has three breakwaters called, from North to South, Overseas (Breakwater 3), Local (Breakwater 1) and fisher’s (Breakwater 1) as well as a combustible sector on the South Breakwater’s internal lateral. The North area consists of a passengers’ dock over the North Breakwater, continues with a Naval Base located in Dock F, then there is a marina for sport boats, both protected by breakwater 4. The south area is called Dock C. It is limited by Breakwaters 2 and 3 and contains two docking places (12 and 13) over the Breakwater 3, used for the loading of grain from the raised silo’s battery of the Grains’ National Committee.
