Mejillones (Port Code:CLMJS) is on the south side of Bahia Mejillones del Sur, east of Punta Angamos and 40nm north of Antofagasta. The port area is spread out along the bay shoreline and includes a passenger landing jetty, a fish terminal and fishing vessel berths. The port consists of passenger berths (Muelle Fiscal), one fishing vessel berth, and one terminal with three mooring buoys for the discharge of ammonia.
There are three terminal areas handling coal, chemical products, ammonia and explosives and a new LNG terminal (FLNG tanker). Additionally, to the northeast, Puerto Angamos has four privately owned berths, mainly handling copper and containers, and Caleta Michilla has a small privately owned terminal for the discharge of sulphuric acid. Large areas of red or coffee coloured plankton are a local phenomenon. Sometimes the waters turn yellow, giving the impression there are shoal banks.
