Mevagissey, (Port Code:GBMEV) one of the oldest fishing ports in the UK and once the centre of Cornwall’s pilchard fishery, is easily one of the most charming and picturesque port towns in Cornwall. The second largest fishing port in Cornwall, Mevagissey Harbour is beautiful, historic and hosts a thriving fishing industry. Mevagissey Harbour Trustees have owned and managed the port since 1774. The harbour is a national asset with a long and fascinating history. Although around 70 vessels still work the waters here, tourism appears to have overtaken as Mevagissey’s main industry.
Mevagissey harbour is built on the site of a medieval quay. The first Act of Parliament allowing the new port to be built was passed in 1774. The inner harbour, consisting of the current East and West Quays, was constructed from this time. An outer harbour was added in 1888, but seriously damaged in a blizzard in 1891. The outer walls were rebuilt by 1897. The harbour was given charitable trust status in 1988.
