New Westminster (Port Code:CANWE) is one of western Canada’s busiest ports, a major rail junction, and one of the province’s largest industrial and marketing centres. New Westminster is located on the Burrard Peninsula, mainly on the north bank of the Fraser River. The port comprises the first 100km of the main arm of the Fraser River, providing some 270km of shoreline. Nine municipalities, Coquitlam, Delta, Langley, Maple Ridge, New Westminster, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Richmond and Surrey border the port. There are three major deep sea facilities and many riverside businesses are now serviced by barge traffic rather than seagoing vessels. The port area handles containers, break-bulk, Ro-Ro, vehicles and general cargo. Historically, the area's economy has been based on forestry products, wood pulp and saw mills.
