The Port of Niigata (Port Code:JPKIJ), located in the center of the Japanese mainland, is an international port on the Sea of Japan coast line. Niigata Port (West Port), located at the mouth of the Shinano River, is designated as one of the five ports that opened Japan to the world, together with Hakodate, Yokohama, Kobe, and Nagasaki. On January 1, 2019, the port celebrated 150 years of existence.
The Port of Niigata is divided into two districts: the West Port district and the East Port district. The West Port is a 10-minute drive from the Niigata Airport and the JR Niigata Station, and the JR Niigata Station is only 97 minutes away from Tokyo via the fastest bullet train. Some 20 kilometers away, the East Port District is equipped with container terminals and can accommodate 160,000ton-class ships. About 110 kilometers north of Japan’s Port of Naoetsu, it has terminals for containerized and bulk cargoes as well as for tankers and liquefied natural gas. Linked by highway to Tokyo, Tohoku, and Osaka, it is an important distribution hub as well.
