Nosy Be (Port Code:MGNBE)(aka Nossi be, Nosse Be) is located off northwest Madagascar. In the 17t hcentury, Nosy Be was named Assada and famous as an important port serving sugar cane plantation production of sugar and rum. Cruise ships to Nosy Be Island dock (anchor) at Hell-Ville - port town on the southern coast.
It is a commercial port with limited facilities, mainly engaged in coastal cargo and ferry services and the fishing industry. Ocean going vessels normally work cargo at anchor in the roads. A port of call for Indian and Arabian dhows in the northwest monsoon season and also for cruise liners, which have to tender passengers ashore. Exports: Sugar, coffee, vanilla and perfume oils. Imports: Petroleum products and general/container cargoes. Approx 60 vessels, 46,000t of hydrocarbons, 5,000t of cocoa, 3,000t of coffee, 7,000t of sugar and 14,000t of containers handled annually.
