The Seaport of Papenburg (Port Code:DEPAP) is situated immediately on the Federal Waterway Ems – as the southernmost seaport in Germany. Some 75 percent of the goods handled here come from maritime transport. Among other things, the innovative shipyard Meyer Werft has its headquarters here. The port opens onto the Sielkanal via two entrance locks, the Seesschleuse lock 154m in length and 26m in width, for general use, and very large vessels, with up to 43m beam can enter the harbour by the shipyard Dockschlease lock, width 46m. Facilities are available for general cargo vessels and bulk carriers, with passenger vessels also using the port. There are two shipbuilding and repair yards in the port.
Papenburg is Niedersachsen’s number one port for the cargo handling of peat moss. In addition, agricultural goods, iron, steel, building materials, wood and project cargo are also processed here. Thanks to the excellent hinterland connection, the goods handled in Papenburg are reaching business hubs in Germany and Europe. Via the Dortmund-Ems Canal, the Seaport of Papenburg is connected to the inland waterway network, and it is also in the immediate vicinity of the Federal Freeway, the ‘Autobahn’.
