Porto-Novo (Port Code:BJPTN) is a a key port on the lagoon, offering a route with Colonou its outlet to the sea, an alternative to those who wanted. It is located on an inlet of the Gulf of Guinea, in the southeastern portion of Benin. Translated from Portuguese to mean “New Port” in English, Porto-Novo is a port on the Gulf of Guinea that originally was a hub for the slave trade led by the Portuguese Empire. Porto-Novo is sometimes called Hogbonou or Adjacé. Petroleum was discovered off the coast of the city in the 1990s, and has become an important export.
