The Port of Richmond (Port Code: USRIC) is a major port in California's San Francisco Bay, located in the East Bay city and Oakland suburb of Richmond. Opened in 1980, it covers a land area of 200 acres (0.81 km2). It boasts the third largest volume of tonnage in the state of California annually-a total of 19 million short tons. The port is Northern California's most diversified cargo handler. With its roots in petroleum and liquid bulk cargos, Richmond has expanded operations for dry bulk, break-bulk, and containerized cargo and has increased its automobile processing facilities. Today, Richmond ranks Number One in liquid bulk and automobile tonnage among ports on San Francisco Bay.
