The port of San Pedro de Macoris (Port Code: DOSPM) is a port located on the Higuamo River on the southern coast of the island, approximately 60km east of Santo Domingo. As the oldest harbor in the country, the port is used mainly for exporting sugar and molasses produced by several sugar cane mills in the region. The port is also used to import bulk fertilisers, coal and cement clinkers in bulk. Occasionally fertilisers and cement in bags are exported in small vessels to adjacent islands. Tankers discharge fuel and diesel oil to shore tanks. Approximately 210 vessels visit the port annually. San Pedro de Macoris used to receive most of the operations for the Port of Santo Domingo, because this one was unable to handle that capacity of boats in that moment.
