Sovetskaya Gavan port (Port Code:RUSOG) , also known as Sovgavan, is home to the largest naval base in the Gulf of Tartary, a commercial port and the Pacific Terminal of the Trans-Siberian Railway. It is situated on the Pacific coastline 8km S of Vanino and 70nm W of Sakhalin Island, connecting the Sea of Okhotsk in the north with the Sea of Japan in the south.
The port consists of five administrative divisions: Bukhta Kuryksha and Bukhta Okocha on S side of estuary, Bukhta Severnaya, Bukhta Vanina (see separate entry under Vanino) and Bukhta Zapadnaya on N side of the estuary. Main cargo is timber in logs and sawn products, general/transhipment cargoes and Naval fleet services, including bunker replenishment.
