The Summerside Port (port code:CASUM) is well positioned for shipping activity from along the Eastern Seaboard of the US, the St Lawrence Seaway, and Atlantic Canada. It is located approximately 25 km from the Confederation Bridge, the year-round connection between the Island and the mainland.
It includes two breakwaters and 3 independent terminals, the Marine Terminal, Holman's Wharf and Queen's Wharf. These mainly handle fertilizer, root crops, lobsters and gravel. The port has a woodworking factory and a beef packing and cold storage plant. The navigation season is from mid April to the end of Dec with occasional icebreaker support. A Canadian Air Forces air station is located at Summerside, to the N of the town.
