Vanino Port (Port Code: RUVNN) is a port lying on the western shore of the Tatar Strait. The water area includes parts of Vanin and Muchke Bays. The port is 930 km. northwest of Vladivostock and 680 km. north of Sapporo, Japan. Vanino is naturally sheltered and open throughout the year. Cargoes handled include containers dry and liquid bulk, forest products, railway wagons, passengers and general cargo. Served by the BAM railway line, the port has boosted the regional economy and is among the ten largest ports of Russia measured by its cargo-handling volume. It is also Russia's second largest coal port on the Pacific after Vostochny Port (near Nakhodka), with between 15 million tons and 20 million tons of coal being handled per year. Sakhalin Shipping Company runs regular cargo boats from this port to Magadan, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and Pusan, as well as ferries to Russian mainland.
