Vientiane Port (port code: LAVTE) is the central river port in Laos. It is situated on a plain just northeast of the Mekong River.
The port is connected with the port city of Vung Ang in Vietnam via the Laos-Vietnam railway, a proposed railway project aimed to further boost Laos’ ambitions to become a regional logistics hub. Vung Ang Port will give Laos crucial access to the South China Sea and the large markets of South Korea and Japan, among others.
Before 1975 the port was the principal stock shipping centre of the country. Since the shift in the country’s import trade from Vietnam to Thailand, it has replaced Pakxé to the southeast as Laos’s principal port of entry.
